Heating a pool efficiently: solar heaters and heat pumps

Why many pool owners are moving away from electric resistance heaters, and how solar heating and heat pumps compare.

Electric resistance heaters warm pool water directly, and they are simple to install. But for a pool that is used through the cooler months, their running cost adds up quickly. As part of our Eco Select approach, New Pool encourages clients to consider two more economical options.

Solar heating

A solar heater uses the sun’s energy to warm the water as it circulates through collectors, usually installed on a roof or another sunny area near the plant room.

  • Lower running cost: the main energy source is free once the system is installed.
  • Best suited to outdoor pools with good sun exposure and enough space for the collectors.
  • Worth planning early, so the collector area and pipe routes are coordinated with the architect.

Heat pumps

A heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it to the pool water. Because it moves heat rather than generating it, it uses considerably less electricity than a direct electric heater for the same result.

  • Works day and night, independent of direct sunlight.
  • Compact, and suitable for indoor and outdoor pools.
  • Some models can also cool the water, which is useful during hot summer months.

Choosing the right option

The best solution depends on how the pool is used, its size, whether it is indoor or outdoor, and the space available for equipment. Our engineers assess these factors during design and recommend a heating system that balances comfort, running cost and long-term maintenance.
